If you notice two charges on your card for a single charging session, this could be due to the way authorization holds work. Here’s a breakdown of the situation and what you can expect.
Why You See Two Charges
When you begin a charging session, EVCS places a pre-authorization hold on your card (usually $30 or $50). After the charging session completes, this amount adjusts to reflect the actual cost of the session.
For a brief period, you may see two charges: one for the pre-authorization amount and another for the actual charging session cost. Here’s how this works:
- Pre-authorization hold: This is temporarily held on your card, typically for $30 or $50, depending on the station.
- Actual charging cost: Once the charging session is complete, the actual charge will appear (for example, $6.88).
- Settling period: The original pre-authorization amount will then drop from your account after the charge settles.
For example, you might initially see two charges, one for $43.12 and another for $6.88, which add up to $50. The $43.12 charge will drop, leaving only the $6.88 for the charging session.
When to Expect the Pre-authorization to Drop
Typically, the hold drops off immediately after the charging session ends. However, it can take longer to adjust, depending on your bank or card issuer's processing times.
