Try these troubleshooting steps if your charging session fails to start.
Initial Diagnostics (App and Vehicle)
Verify Availability and Vehicle Status
-
Check Station Status: Before proceeding, verify the station is set to an Available status in the EVCS app's "Stations" page or on the website. If the station is listed as Offline, you will need to locate another EVCS charger.
- Turn Off Vehicle: For some vehicles, charging may only start if the car is fully turned off. Ensure the following before charging: Roll up all windows, turn off the vehicle, and unplug any devices from the car.
- Low Charge Warning: If your vehicle's charge level is critically low (below 15%), it may need to be charged using a Level 1 or Level 2 system first.
Hardware and Initiation Checks
Cable Connection and Activation
- Secure the Cable: Ensure the charging cable is securely connected to your vehicle. If using a Tesla adapter, connect the adapter to your car first, then attach the charging cable to the adapter. Make sure the connection is firm—you may need to push the connector and adapter together a bit more to ensure it's fully secure.
-
On-Screen Prompts: After plugging in, check the charger panel/LCD screen. Some stations require an additional step:
-
Press the "Start" button on the station. (Some chargers require this step after authorization.)
- Select the desired charging cable if the station has multiple buttons corresponding to the cables.
-
Press the "Start" button on the station. (Some chargers require this step after authorization.)
- Check Emergency Stop: Make sure the red Emergency Stop button on the charger is released. If it is not, please contact EVCS Customer Support for assistance.
Try a Different Payment Method
If you used the app, try swiping the card or vice versa. More details can be found in our article: How to Start a Charging Session.
Locate Another Station
If none of the above steps work, you may need to try a different charging station at the site, or find a different site location.
