Most EV vehicles have a safety lock mechanism that prevents the charging cable from being released while a charging session is active. This guide offers troubleshooting steps to release the cable lock.
Ensure the Session is Ended
The most common reason for a stuck cable is that the charging session is technically still in progress. Before proceeding, make sure the session has ended.
End the Session Remotely or Locally
- EVCS App or Web App: Press the Stop button on the charging menu.
- Charging Station: Press the manual Stop button on the front of the charging station or station's on-screen LCD panel. Alternatively, if the session was started with a card, tap your card on the credit card reader, then press the Stop button on the station.
- Vehicle Menus: Navigate to your vehicle's charging screen and select the option to end the session. You can also try setting the max charge percentage to a number lower than your vehicle's current state of charge (e.g., if you are at 82%, set the max charge level to 80%).
Use the Release Mechanism
Once you've verified that the session has ended, use the release mechanism on the charging handle itself.
Press the Release Button
- Press and Release: Most charging station cables have a button or raised bump on the top of the handle. Press this button firmly.
- Troubleshoot Stickiness: If the button feels stiff or sticking, try pushing the handle into the port slightly before re-attempting the release.
Check Vehicle Locks
If the release button does not work, the vehicle's internal safety lock is likely still engaged.
Unlock Vehicle Doors
Try unlocking the door, then attempt to remove the cable. Some vehicles require pressing the unlock button 3 or 4 times in a row.
Manually Override the Lock
- Check your vehicle's owner's manual for a manual unlock option. This may be a menu option for an "unlock" or "release" button located on your vehicle's main charging screen.
- Your vehicle may also be equipped with a physical handle, lever, or cable (often located in the trunk or near the charge port) that will override the automatic lock. Please make sure that the charging session has ended before attempting a manual override.
